Why? Because it's a battle of wits between two people. Beatrice the witch and Battler (who actually admits how stupid his name is) the detective. A muder happens that seems magical and Battler has to explain how a human culprit could do it. For example in this scene Beatrice guts people alive and stuffs candy into their stomachs. The room is completely sealed where there's no way in or out and beatrice claims it was done by magic. Battler then has to come up with some crazy ass answer or else spend eternity in hell. So how does he explain it? There were tiny bombs in the food that they ate. The beauty is that she can't prove that explosives weren't put into the cookies. This answer is actually referenced throughout the series as to how out there and deperate of a move it was. Anyways, if that sounds intresting, you should read the manga, or if you have a shit load of time (like me) read the visual novel.

Fair warning, don't watch the anime as it's terrible. Also the first "episode" of the manga is pretty slow but goes from 0-60 like a P1 as soon as it reaches the second "episode".
